Preliminary exercise learner response

LR: What have you learned about filming and editing from this preliminary exercise? What will you change or do differently for your real coursework production over the next three weeks?

For filming I should take my time for every clip and film perfectly . To make the editing better I should make the transitions from clip to clip look more natural . Have good timing.

WWW: This is a good preliminary exercise that meets the brief – there are some really nice creative touches here. I like the opening close up that tells the audience this will be a phone call and then the shots of the two characters are pretty well framed. The shot of you looking at the camera is unusual but I think it just about works here. Also, both characters offer good expression / surprise which makes the performances better.

EBI: A few comments to consider for the real production – firstly, the editing is a little rushed so the conversation doesn’t feel natural – it cuts from one line to the next too quickly. I actually think you could have slowed the conversation down a bit which would have pushed the production up to 30 seconds and therefore met the brief perfectly. You want it to sound as naturally paced as possible. Finally, I don’t think the second shot (0.20) with you looking at the camera works – it will feel very strange for the audience to be directly addressed by a character like that so I would avoid that in the real production.
